Morry is the Managing Director and Head of Investments of Vinva. Prior to starting Vinva, Morry spent over 12 years with Barclays Global Investors (BGI) where he covered Australian and global equities. BGI was the largest investment manager in the world. Morry joined BGI in 1997 as the Head of Equity Investments with a mandate to develop an active equity business for BGI in Australia in long-only and long-short strategies. Morry put together a highly successful investment team with an investment process that delivered outperformance in 11 out of 12 years and which had active Australian equity client assets of over $25bn at the time. He was later given the dual role of Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer for BGI’s overall Australian business which had $50bn in assets for Australian and New Zealand clients. He further ascended through the global organisation and was appointed Global Chief Investment Officer and responsible for BGI’s Global Active Equity Business which had client assets of over USD250bn across US, European and Asian equity markets.

Morry is a proven and experienced leader in the investment management industry who has a long-term track record of innovation and delivery of investment performance to clients. Prior to BGI, Morry was the Head of Quantitative Research at Rothschild Asset Management. He started his career at Legal & General in the Actuarial Research Division after they had awarded him a full University Scholarship. Morry holds a Master of Economics (majoring in Actuarial Science and Statistics) and a Bachelor of Economics, both from Macquarie University.

Andrew Jackson
Head of Research

Andrew is a Principal of Vinva. Prior to joining Vinva in 2010, Andrew was the Head of Equity Investments at BlackRock in Australia. Previously, Andrew was the Head of Australian Equity Research at BGI from 2003 to 2009. There he was responsible for developing new stock selection signals, enhancing and monitoring the existing suite of signals, and managing the Australian research team as well as part of the global equity research team. Andrew was also one of two members in the Asia Pacific region to be on the BGI global equity research approval board which had oversight and responsibility for reviewing all equity research across global markets. Prior to BGI, Andrew worked as a portfolio manager and researcher for both SSgA and Lend Lease Investment Management, and has over 15 years experience in equity portfolio management and research.

Andrew has a PhD in Finance from London Business School and a strong and proven research track record with papers published in leading international journals such as the Journal of Finance, Journal of Portfolio Management and the Journal of Business. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, has a Masters of Finance, is a CFA charter holder and a Fellow of FINSIA, and has a first class honours degree with the university medal in actuarial studies and economics from Macquarie University.

Nick is a Principal of Vinva responsible for portfolio management. Prior to Vinva, Nick was a Senior Portfolio Manager at BGI responsible for managing Australian equity portfolios and enhancing BGI’s trading capabilities. Nick has proven portfolio management capabilities, strong trading insights and a proven track record of delivering investment performance to clients.

Prior to BGI, Nick spent 10 years at JPMorgan as the Head of Asia Pacific Quantitative Research, where he managed a group of research analysts and investment programmers in the Asia Pacific region. His team was rated consistently in the Top 3 teams in the Asian equity markets by external surveys such as BRW and Greenwich. He also held the position of Head of Centralised Execution with responsibility for managing a team of 10 investment professionals in the JP Morgan proprietary trading team.

Nick has a Bachelor of Commerce – Majoring in Finance (Honours) from the University of NSW. His Honours thesis was “Pricing of SPI Futures Options using intraday prices”.

Prior to joining Vinva in 2012, Steve was Managing Director and Global Head of Quantitative Strategy for J.P. Morgan Equity Research based in Hong Kong. In this role he was responsible for 6 international research desks covering all the major equity markets. Responsibilities included advising the institutional client base on systematic investment strategies and portfolio construction techniques as well as providing regular and ad hoc research publications and bespoke analysis.

Steve joined J.P. Morgan in 2003 and initially focused on the Australian market before expanding his remit to include all Asia Pacific markets in 2005 and all global markets in 2008. Between 2005 and 2012 he was recognised by investors for his research on Asia Pacific markets with consistent top finishes on all the major analyst surveys including Asia Money, Extel, Greenwich and the highly regarded Institutional Investors survey on which he ranked as the #1 Asian quant strategist for three consecutive years (2009, 2010, 2011). Prior to J.P. Morgan he spent 4 years at Credit Suisse working in Australian equity research as a member of the quantitative data analytics team and before entering the finance industry Steve spent 6 years designing and developing software systems for a variety of blue chip companies in London, Dublin and Sydney.

Steve holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Bristol University, UK, a Post Graduate Diploma in Knowledge Engineering and a Post Graduate Certificate in Applied Finance and Investment

Trent joined Vinva as a Portfolio Manager in 2012 after 11 years at BGI and BlackRock. From 2001-2008 Trent was a senior trader and portfolio manager with BGI in London where he focused primarily on the European active equity strategies which totalled approx. 50bn AUD in assets. Beyond his responsibilities of enhancing the trading process and platforms, Trent was also involved in launching and managing the mid horizon long-short active strategy.

In 2008 Trent moved to Sydney with BGI where he was appointed Head of Asia Pacific Equity Trading. He was responsible for establishing and managing the Asia Pacific equity trading desk, enhancing BGIs trading capabilities in the region and also responsible for the trading and implementation of all active Asian long-short equity strategies. Trent played a key role in alpha generation and the launching of new active Asia Pacific equity strategies. In 2010 Trent was promoted to Managing Director and appointed Head of Trading across Asia Pac for BlackRock, this involved all assets classes and investment products in the region. He was also a member of the Global Executive Trading Group and Australian Leadership Group.
Prior to joining BGI, Trent spent 5 years with BNP Parabis in the portfolio management and trading group.

Trent holds a Master of Finance and a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance from the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (Finsia). He also has a Bachelor of Business from Newcastle University.

Abi joined Vinva in 2021 as an investment intern after graduating with her Bachelor degrees from UNSW. Whilst studying, she undertook internships at EY in the Data and Analytics team, and HESTA as part of the Quantitative Solutions and Risk team. She also taught a number of Actuarial and Mathematics courses at UNSW.

Abi has a double degree in Actuarial Studies and Advanced Mathematics graduating with first class honours and the university medal in Applied Mathematics. She is currently completing her PhD at UNSW in Computational Mathematics looking at the theory and application quasi-Monte Carlo methods for numerical integration. Abi has presented her research at a number of Australian and international conferences. She has also been a Dean’s award recipient for the Faculty of Science and UNSW Business school and won the Paradice Honours year scholarship in 2020.

TK joined Vinva in 2017 after 11 years with BlackRock/Merrill Lynch. TK is a senior investment professional who has extensive global equity research experience focusing on global security selection models investing in Asian, European and North American equity markets. He has also successfully applied machine learning algorithms on a global basis to equity strategies.

At BlackRock, he was part of the Scientific Active Equity (SAE) team, where he worked on equity research projects across both quantitative & fundamental teams. He was awarded the best global equity research award in 2011 and 2012.  In his last year at BlackRock, TK was a member of Global Equity Research Review Board, which has responsibility for all equity research approval in BlackRock. On the portfolio management side, he helped build the research systems and portfolio management & optimisation tools.

TK has a PhD from Monash University, where he was Scholarship holder, majoring in Statistical Machine Learning and High Dimensional Data Analysis. He also has a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Cape Town University where he graduated with First Class Honours and was on the Dean’s Merit List for 3 years running and was also awarded Best Electrical Engineering Student in South Africa. He is also a CFA charterholder.

Danny Lo

Danny joined Vinva in 2011 with the responsibility of researching new equity security selection models, ESG integration and other ways to enhance aspects of the existing investment process. Before joining Vinva, Danny spent two years in London working as a portfolio manager in the fixed income team managing Macquarie’s global sovereign fixed income funds. Prior to this, Danny worked as a quantitative research analyst responsible for all facets of research including alpha generation, risk analysis and performance attribution across a suite of products. Danny holds double degrees in Commerce and Science majoring in actuarial studies and mathematics, graduating with first class honours and the university medal. He was awarded a PhD in Finance at the University of Technology, Sydney.

His PhD dissertation topic focuses on understanding the microstructure of the ASX market and explaining the cross-section of equity returns.

Robert Franklin
Research Analyst

Rob joined Vinva in 2020 as a Research Analyst in the investment team, focusing on researching new equity security selection models as well as looking for ways to enhance aspects of the existing investment process. Rob is an experienced researcher and programmer, with over 10 years’ experience developing quantitative models, having built and used machine learning methods in financial markets, as well as for computer vision and NLP problems.

Prior to joining Vinva, Rob worked for 57degrees, an AI robotics company in the UK, where he was a Lead Scientist, researching and developing classification and semantic segmentation neural networks for computer vision that integrated into the robot’s 3D environment mapping framework.  Prior to that, Rob worked in London for Aberdeen Standard Investments for over 10 years, where he was most recently a quantitative investment manager, Macro Systematic Strategies, in the Multi-Asset group.  In this role, Rob was responsible for researching equity and rates futures systematic strategies, where he designed and built signals based on price, market structure and macro fundamentals and aggregated with a range of machine learning models. After completing University Rob was selected in the Credit Suisse Asset Management Graduate program in Sydney where he started his career prior to moving to London.

Rob is an active participant in machine learning competitions (currently ranked in the top 1% globally on Kaggle) including time-series modelling, computer vision and NLP. Rob studied at Sydney University where he completed a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) majoring in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and where he was the recipient of the Tim Brown Prize (1st place overall for final year statistics). He also completed an Honours year in Statistics, where he graduated with First Class Honours. He is also FSA CF30 approved, holding an Investment Management Certificate (IMC) Level 1 and 2.

Juliane Krug
Research Analyst

Juliane joined the investment team in 2021, researching new equity security selection models, ESG integration as well as looking for ways to enhance aspects of the existing investment process. She has extensive experience in market microstructure research, market risk and data science. Before joining Vinva, Juliane worked in the quantitative risk team at ASX, developing stress test models for equities and options and managing the futures margining. Prior to that she was in charge of market microstructure metrics for EMEA markets for a start-up under RoZetta. She taught as a lecturer big data in finance at the Chinese University of Hongkong in Shenzhen.

Juliane has a PhD in market microstructure from UNSW business school, receiving several scholarships. Her dissertation focussed on the relationship of market transparency, alternative competing orderbooks and price discovery, informed trading, transaction costs and informational efficiency. She has published on behavioural finance in the Journal of Banking and Finance. Juliane holds a Bachelor and Masters in business and civil engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt, majoring in corporate finance and environmental engineering and is a member of Engineers Australia.

Duncan Forrest

Duncan joined Vinva in 2010 after 12 years with BGI. Duncan started at BGI in 1997 as an Equity Systems Specialist in the Australian Equities Team. He played a key role leading the development of the investment technology platform, and was directly responsible for design, development and implementation of proprietary portfolio management systems, enterprise database platforms and development tools. He was also responsible for establishing and managing proprietary data feeds with internal and external data suppliers.

Duncan has extensive experience in developing systems for the funds management industry. He has proven ability with design, coding and implementation of industry leading investment management infrastructure and software systems.

Duncan commenced his career with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in Sydney. He then was promoted through a number of roles eventually moving into Commonwealth Financial Services in 1992, where he was responsible for all in-house systems and maintenance, as well as the development of new systems technologies. In particular, he developed an in-house risk management and portfolio attribution system.

Gangeyan joined Vinva in 2010 after 6 years at BGI and BlackRock Australia. His experience was as a Senior Design and Development Engineer where he played a key role in developing and implementing an Australian ETF platform and was a lead in the development and implementation of back-to-middle-office applications. He then moved into the Australian equity investment team as an Equities Systems Analyst where he was involved in the design and development of signals as well as supporting the Investment Technology Platform.

Before BGI, he was Senior Development Engineer at British Aerospace Engineering in Adelaide where he received the Chairman’s Award for Innovation for designing and developing an Objective Management System. Gangeyan started his career as an Analyst Programmer and has worked in various industries including Manufacturing, Logistics, Defense and Finance.

Gangeyan holds a Masters of Science degree from the University of Westminster, UK.

Jenny joined Vinva in 2013 after eight years with BGI and BlackRock Australia.  Jenny is a technology professional who has extensive experience working closely with business units implementing key software solutions in addition to a variety of end-to-end process automation.  Jenny is a specialist across detailed business analysis, proprietary software development and solution implementation through to investment process support. Jenny’s focus at Vinva is to help manage and maintain our proprietary investment data and assist in continuing to advance our leading-edge investment technology platform.

Before joining BGI, Jenny worked with Logica as software developer in a number of Government initiatives including the Gas Retail Market Business System, NSW Greenhouse Gas Registry System and the Department of Commerce eBusiness procurement project.

She started her IT career with Westpac as part of their graduate program working on Hogan, the bank’s internally developed core banking system, while undertaking her bachelor degree.

John Manning
Investment Process Technology

John joined Vinva in 2016 after 14 years at BGI and BlackRock Australia. During that time, he held a number of roles including leading the Australian Development Team. He was responsible for the development, implementation and management of applications and data feeds, primarily for the back and middle office.

In recent years, John’s focus was the consolidation of a large portfolio of applications from across the business, and integrating local and global systems.  Prior to BGI, John’s experience includes 7 years at Dresdner Bank AG working as a Senior Software Engineer for both the front and back office. This work included the areas of Foreign Exchange, Fixed Income, Compliance and Operations. This followed an earlier role at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC).

Prior to joining Vinva in 2010, Charles was the Head of Global Investments at HSBC Australia from 2008-2010. Charles established the wholesale wealth management business in Australia and formulated and implemented the institutional and retail investment management strategy for the Group. Charles was a member of the bank management team and the Asia Pacific Executive Committee for HSBC Global Asset Management.  Charles was also a member of the retail risk management committee and a member of the HSBC superannuation fund oversight board.

Previously Charles was Head of Sales and Consultant Relationships, for BGI between 2003 and 2008, where he oversaw the sales effort and managed key client relationships for the business. His role also included formulating strategy to grow new business. Between 2000 and 2003, he held the position of senior manager, institutional business for BGI. Prior to this, Charles was at Westpac Investment Management for six years, working in various roles including portfolio manager, client manager and senior business development manager.

Charles has a Bachelor of Economics from Macquarie University, Diploma of Technical Analysis, Master of Applied Finance, is a CFP (Certified Financial Planner) and has an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management. Charles also is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors

Clare joined Vinva in 2018 after 14 years at Schroder Investment Management where she was the Head of Financial Institutions and also held positions of Institutional Client Director and Head of Client Services. Clare was responsible for developing and implementing the sales strategy and maintaining strategic relationships with Schroders’ largest financial institution clients and consultants. During her time at Schroders, Clare’s clients included banks, superannuation, government, endowment and sovereign funds in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Prior to Schroders, Clare was a Practice Development Adviser for the Financial Services group at Mallesons Stephen Jaques. Clare also spent five years at Northern Trust in the UK where she was a Second Vice President and held roles including Institutional Relationship Consultant for Northern Trust Global Investments and Marketing Manager for the custody business.

Clare is a Certified Investment Management Analyst, holds a Bachelor of Science with Honours from the University of Plymouth in the UK and Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance from FINSIA.

Veronique Ellison

Veronique joined Vinva in 2014 after almost 10 years with BGI and BlackRock Australia where she was a Vice President where she was responsible for developing and maintaining strategic client relationships. This involved working closely with asset consultants and providing product and company updates at client Investment Committee and Trustee meetings. Before BlackRock’s acquisition of BGI, Veronique held various positions including Client Manager and Investment Communications specialist. She was responsible for developing and maintaining BGI’s strategic client relationships, along with completing new business proposals, RFP’s and maintaining consultant and client databases for the Australian business.

Prior to BGI, Veronique was a communications specialist at HSBC where she worked within the Public Relations and Marketing team. She was responsible for ASX Investor Days, new branch openings and sponsorships including Jaguar Formula One racing and Super 12’s rugby team, the Waratahs.

Veronique has a Masters in Applied Finance from FINSIA and a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in operations research from Macquarie University.

Rozita joined Vinva in 2013 after seven years with BGI and BlackRock Australia. Prior to joining Vinva, Rozita was a Vice President at BlackRock Australia where she was responsible for maintaining relationships with Australian asset consultants and clients as well as leading the RFP function within the Australian business. Before BlackRock’s acquisition of BGI, Rozita was responsible for completing new business proposals, due diligence questionnaires and investment surveys, as well as maintaining consultant and client databases for the Australian business.

Prior to BGI, Rozita was an Economics and Financial Markets Research Analyst at Stone & McCarthy Research Associates, where she was responsible for quantitative and qualitative research analysis covering economics, financial markets and political economy for the Japanese and Asia Pacific regions. Rozita began her career at Commonwealth Bank of Australia where she joined the graduate program working in Institutional Banking as a Private Client Advisor on direct Australian equities.

Rozita has a Bachelor of Economics, majoring in Economics and Finance from the University of Sydney and a Masters in Advanced Finance from the University of New South Wales.

Samantha joined Vinva in 2010 after spending 5 years at BGI where she was Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer who led the business that managed $50B in funds under management. Prior to this role, Samantha was personal assistant to the Head of Institutional Business and a major part of her role was Events Management for the Institutional Sales and Service team. This team was one of the largest, most successful financial services sales teams in the Australian market –with activities covering approximately eight annual conferences and many sales and marketing activities.

Before BGI, Samantha worked as Executive Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer of Risk at Barclays Capital in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has also worked in various industries including financial planning as Client Service support, Advertising as PA to the Deputy MD of Client Service and Franchising.

Samantha is our Event Manager as well as providing Client Service Support.

Monique Nugent
ESG Stewardship Director 

Monique joined Vinva in October 2011 and is responsible for all ESG stewardship activities including proxy voting for our Australian and global equity funds and engagement on ESG issues with our investee companies.  

Prior to joining Vinva, Monique was Director of Corporate Governance for BlackRock Australia where she was responsible for all governance issues for Australian and New Zealand equities held by BlackRock’s clients globally.  This included voting, engagement, PRI, and non-investment related environment and social issues.  Before BlackRock’s acquisition of Barclays Global Investors (BGI) in December 2009, Monique was Corporate Governance Manager for BGI Australia, responsible for all corporate governance and proxy voting issues on behalf of client’s Australian equity portfolios. She was also responsible for class actions.  Monique has over 18 years’ experience in corporate governance and ESG with Vinva and previously at BGI/BlackRock.  Monique served for 12 years at BGI and previously held various positions in Client Service and Institutional Business.  Monique joined BGI initially in the London office in 1997 and moved to the Australian office in early 2000. 

Monique has over 30 years’ experience in the investment management industry, including positions with Macquarie Investment Management and Westpac Investment Management.   Monique has a Bachelor of Arts from Canberra University and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment.

 

Robert Cochrane

Rob is responsible for the financial operations of Vinva. He has over 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry.  Prior to joining Vinva in September 2010 as the Chief Operating Officer, Rob served as the Chief Operating Officer of BlackRock Australia. Prior to that, Rob was Chief Operating Officer at BGI where he was responsible for business management and all operational functions including investment operations, finance, tax, risk, compliance, legal and human resources. Rob served for 11 years at BGI and held several roles, including Chief Financial Officer and Head of Operations.

Before BGI, Rob was the corporate financial controller for ING Australia (Mercantile Mutual), and before that, a senior manager at Arthur Andersen in the financial services practice in both London and Sydney.

Rob is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and holds a Bachelor of Economics from Macquarie University.

Tanya is responsible for overseeing the Operations, Risk and Compliance functions for Vinva, including managing outsourced investment administration relationships.

She has over 20 years’ experience in the financial services industry.

Prior to joining Vinva in March 2022, Tanya was a Director and equity holder at the outsourced fund administrator White Outsourcing (now Link Fund Solutions after being acquired by the Link Group).

Her experience there included Head of Operations, responsible for the Fund Accounting, Registry and Investment Operations team as well as General Manager overseeing Risk and Compliance, Commercial arrangements and Procurement, Human resources, and corporate finances.

Tanya is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and holds a Bachelor of Business, majoring in Accounting and Marketing from the University of Technology, Sydney.

Sarah joined Vinva in 2018 as Compliance Manager supporting the Chief Operating Officer. Prior to joining Vinva, Sarah spent 6 years with AMP Capital where she most recently led a team of Institutional Client Account Managers. A major part of her role was preparing Board and Investment Committee papers and implementing regulatory changes as well as ensuring the institutional clients received timely and accurate reports and guidance on any matters affecting their portfolios.

Prior to AMP Capital, Sarah led a team of trade support staff at Blackrock Australia. She also spent 7 years with AXA Rosenberg in London and transitioned with them to Sydney in 2007 as Assistant Portfolio Manager.

Sarah started her career in Edinburgh with Stewart Ivory Investment Managers in a settlement specialist role before moving to London in 2000 to work with Morley Fund Managers, part of Aviva Group, in various roles including managing trade support teams and business analyst roles. 

Karl Cashin

Karl is a senior database professional with over twenty-five years’ experience of large database implementations in funds management, investment banking, telecommunications, transportation and the e-commerce sector.

He joined Vinva in 2019 after 8 years at NBN Co where he was a Database Architect. In this role, Karl was the Oracle database technical lead in the data centre architecture team supporting the rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN) across Australia.

In the 5 years before joining NBN Co Karl was at Barclays Capital and BGI where he was a senior database specialist in the global support teams.

Karl is an Oracle Certified Master (OCM).

Dhanesh is an IT Technology Professional with over 21 years of experience in the field. He has been supporting IT Infrastructure and Systems at organisations of varied sizes, in Transport, IT & Telecommunications, Veterinary and Retail/Hospitality industries.

Prior to joining Vinva, Dhanesh worked for Endeavour Group where he played a pivotal role in the demerger of the business, ensuring seamless end user transition, network unification and brand new identity management platform rollout to achieve this.

Dhanesh has a BSc in Computer Systems from the University of Auckland. He has strong working knowledge of Technologies such as Virtualisation, Networking and Cloud Infrastructure management.

Katherine retired from Vinva in 2018 after 8 years as Head of Client Relationships and Marketing. She continues to be involved with Vinva as Chair of the Vinva Corporate Governance Committee and is a member of the Vinva Charitable Foundation Committee.

Prior to Vinva, Katherine spent 11 years with BGI as a Managing Director and Head of Distribution, with accountability for approximately 35 sales and client service staff, over 300 institutional clients and retail intermediary platforms. She also had responsibility for functional reporting areas such as: Corporate Governance, Marketing & Communications and Performance & Reporting. Katherine was a member of the BGI Australia Executive Committee for over 10 years, founder of the BGI Women’s Initiative, and a Responsible Manager. She and her team were highly rated by clients in independent surveys such as Greenwich and Mirador.  Katherine also held roles at Legal & General, Pembroke Financial Planners and Bain & Company/Deutsche Bank.

She has a Bachelor of Business and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She has completed the RG 146 Compliance certificate.

 Richard C. Grinold

Richard Grinold served as the Global Director of Research at BGI from 1994 until his retirement in 2009. During his time at BGI he shaped the investment research and innovation agenda that lead to BGI being one of the most successful global active managers in the industry. His global team was responsible for active investment strategies with assets of over USD240 billion. Prior to BGI, Richard was President of BARRA, a leading global investment technology company.  Richard also spent twenty years on the faculty of the School of Business Administration at the University of California, Berkeley.  At Berkeley Richard served as Chairman of the Finance faculty, Chairman of the Management Science faculty, and Director of the Berkeley Program in Finance. Richard was a Research Fellow at Harvard in 1968–69, and a Fellow at CORE in Louvain Belgium in 1974. He has served as a visiting professor at HEC near Paris in 1979–1980, and at the Harvard Business School in 1983–1984.

He has published more than fifty papers in academic and professional journals. Some recent efforts are “Implementation Efficiency”, “A Dynamic Model for Portfolio Management” and “Attribution”.  Richard is one of the most experienced and most respected investment professionals in the global asset management industry. His research innovations and thought leadership in risk modelling, portfolio construction and the systematic approach to exploiting security mispricing have had a positive influence on the asset management industry.  Richard received his Ph.D. in Operations Research from U.C. Berkeley in 1968. He studied Physics at Tufts University and helped to wire up the Harvard-MIT Cambridge Electron Accelerator. Other milestones include serving as the navigator of the USS Gainard DD-706.

Bruce Goddard

Bruce retired from BGI in 2007. Between 2007 and 2009 he was a Senior Consultant to the Head of Global Market Strategies Group at BGI. Bruce spent 20+ years at BGI with the first 10 years in the US while the final 10 years were spent in Australia. When he joined the firm in the US in 1986, he was Head of the Fixed Income Group and later co-Head of the Portfolio Management Group responsible for US and international equity and fixed income index strategies. During 1994-1995 Bruce was the Chief Investment Officer of the Defined Contribution Research and Strategy Group, responsible for the investment products being offered by the firm to the US defined contribution marketplace. He and his team designed the LifePath® strategy, a unique and innovative pension investment product at the time.

In 1997 Bruce, and his family, relocated to Australia to become BGI Australia’s Chief Investment Officer. As CIO, Bruce was responsible for all of the investment strategies offered by BGI in Australia. Between 2000-2007 he was also Global Head of BGI’s Global Market Strategies Group. This group was responsible for designing and managing BGI’s Global Macro Hedge Funds and active currency strategies globally.  Prior to BGI, Bruce managed bond portfolios at Mellon Bank. Bruce received an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley, and a BA in Economics and Statistics and an MA in Finance and Investment from the University of Exeter in England. He has also been a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) since 1986.

Justin Wood

Justin was the CEO of BGI Australia from 2000 to early 2007 before retiring in 2009. At BGI his roles included product development, client advice and strategic planning. Justin has been interested in financial markets, financial planning and the retirement system for several decades. He has combined academic roles, primarily at the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) in the University of New South Wales, and industry roles, primarily at BGI where he worked from 1997 until 2009. At the AGSM his main research interest was the economics of taxes and he was Director of the AGSM’s executive Portfolio Management program for 10 years.

Justin also has a strong interest in risk management. He served on many local and global risk, compliance and fiduciary committees during his time at BGI and was chair of BGI’s global Risk and Compliance Committee from 2006 to 2009. He is a past Board member and Chair of the Investment Board Committee for the Investment and Financial Services Association (IFSA) and has been a regular speaker at industry conferences over the last decade. He received an IFSA industry excellence award in 2009 for contributions to the industry.  Justin is a well-known and respected thought leader who is passionate about understanding and helping develop the regulatory policies and institutional structures that are necessary to meet Australia’s retirement needs in a sustainable manner into the future.  Justin has a PhD in Finance from the University of New South Wales.
